How ChatGPT bills your card

ChatGPT plans bought on chatgpt.com are charged to the card on file at the start of each billing period, monthly or yearly. Plans bought in the iOS or Android app are billed by Apple or Google instead, and paid with your App Store or Google Play payment method.

Local currencies and methods

OpenAI's help center describes multi-currency billing: in some countries ChatGPT is billed in the local currency and offers local methods, such as UPI in India, Pix in Brazil, GoPay in Indonesia and GCash in the Philippines (checked October 2026).

Gift cards

OpenAI says ChatGPT gift cards are bought and redeemed in the US only, in US dollars. Everywhere else a plan is paid with a card or a local method OpenAI lists for the country.

Adding the card

Open ChatGPT's billing settings, add a payment method and enter the card number, expiry date and CVV from My cards, with the billing details shown there. Use the billing details exactly as they appear in My cards: a mismatch is a common reason for a declined payment.

API credits are different

OpenAI's help center says prepaid cards cannot be used to buy API credits, which need a standard credit or debit card. This page is about ChatGPT plans; the API platform has its own billing settings and rules.
