Card declined? Here's why

Most declines have a simple cause. This page explains the common ones and what to check first.

What you get

Not enough on the card

The charge is more than the card can cover. Cards can't be topped up from the dashboard, so use a card that covers the charge.

3-D Secure not completed

The merchant asked for an extra check the card couldn't complete. Try a different card, or contact support with the card's reference number.

Merchant risk checks

Ad platforms run their own checks and may decline a card for reasons we can't see. Try another card type.

Billing details mismatch

Use the billing name and address shown on the card details screen.

Card expired

The card is past its expiry date. Check the expiry in My cards and use a card that is still valid.

Card declines vs platform declines

A payment can fail in two places. Knowing which one tells you what to fix.

The dashboard doesn't show card payments or decline reasons, so check the platform's billing page to see which charge failed. If the card details look right, contact support with the card's reference number.

Facebook and Instagram ads payment failed

Check that the card covers the charge and that the billing details match the ones in My cards. A payment that stays pending usually means Meta will retry, so leave enough on the card until it clears.

If Meta shows the card as not usable while the card side looks fine, the decision is Meta's. Its help center explains your account's options.

Google Ads payment declined or authorization failed

An authorization failure usually means Google's verification or charge was refused by the card: too little on the card or a billing-address mismatch. Copy the billing details from My cards exactly, then retry.

TikTok Ads payment failing

Check that the card covers the charge and that the billing details match the ones in My cards first. Also check that the card currency suits your ad account's currency, which is fixed when the account is created.

About ZenVCC

Acceptance and fair use

Ad platforms and merchants decide which payments they accept, so no card provider can guarantee acceptance. Cards are for legitimate advertising and business payments only, never for getting around a platform's rules or bans.

Why cards get declined FAQ

  • Common causes are a charge larger than the card can cover, billing details that don't match the ones in My cards, an unfinished 3-D Secure check, or Meta's own risk checks.

  • Google often places a small verification charge. If the card can't cover it, or the billing details don't match, that charge is declined.

  • Meta is usually waiting to retry the charge. Leave enough on the card until the payment clears.

  • The card refused Google's verification or charge, usually because of its balance or billing details. Check the billing details in My cards, then retry or use another card.

  • No. Merchants and ad platforms make the final decision on every payment, so no provider can promise acceptance.
